Terms of Service

1. About SmileyRead

SmileyRead ("we", "our", or "us") is a Chinese language learning application designed to help primary school students in Singapore build Mandarin vocabulary in line with the Ministry of Education (MOE) syllabus.

By accessing or using SmileyRead, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, please do not use the service.

2. Eligibility

SmileyRead is intended for use by children under the supervision and consent of a parent or legal guardian. By creating an account, you confirm that:

  • You are at least 18 years of age.
  • You are the parent or legal guardian of the child who will be using the application.
  • You have the authority to agree to these terms on behalf of your household.

3. Your Account

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. Please notify us immediately at hello@smileyread.com if you suspect any unauthorised use of your account.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Use the service for any unlawful purpose or in violation of any applicable laws in Singapore.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the service or its related systems.
  • Reproduce, distribute, or commercially exploit any content from the service without our written consent.
  • Interfere with or disrupt the integrity or performance of the service.

5. Intellectual Property

All content within SmileyRead — including the curriculum, character data, audio, design, and software — is owned by or licensed to SmileyRead. The vocabulary content is aligned with the Singapore MOE Mandarin syllabus for Primary 1 to Primary 6.

You are granted a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the service for personal, non-commercial educational purposes only.

6. Prohibition on Data Extraction and Reverse Engineering

Our vocabulary and word lists are proprietary and represent significant investment in curation, sequencing, and pedagogical design. You expressly agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, disassemble, or otherwise attempt to derive the source code, database structure, or content of SmileyRead.
  • Scrape, crawl, extract, copy, or systematically download any part of our vocabulary list, word examples, character data, or curriculum content.
  • Use automated tools, bots, or scripts to access or harvest data from the application.
  • Reproduce or redistribute our vocabulary or word lists in any form, whether in whole or in part, for any purpose.

Any breach of this clause may result in immediate account termination and may expose you to legal liability under Singapore's Computer Misuse Act and applicable intellectual property laws.

7. Service Availability

We strive to keep SmileyRead available at all times, but we do not guarantee uninterrupted access. We may update, suspend, or discontinue the service at any time without prior notice.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

SmileyRead is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that the service will be error-free, secure, or meet your specific educational requirements.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by Singapore law, SmileyRead shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages arising from your use of the service.

10. Changes to These Terms

We may revise these Terms from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by updating the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the service after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated Terms.

11. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Singapore. Any disputes shall be subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the Singapore courts.
